But past that, after one nerf clearly felt bad during the Slam, they buffed Necromancer skeletons back to their former strength within hours. After beta feedback from the first two weeks, Blizzard didn’t just take that into consideration for launch, they had all the changes made by the Server Slam, reacting to fan issues at a rapid pace. I’ve lost track of how many of these Diablo 4 has done in the weeks leading up to launch, but it feels like there’s one every other day or so, team members discussing loot, class trees, cosmetics, the seasonal model, and now we’ve moved on to the (surprisingly good) story we previewed in the betas. Extremely cool, and very reassuring about the final product.
The betas even had things like community world events for exclusive cosmetics ahead of release. Diablo 4 showed off some pretty huge chunks of the game with three different betas, the last one deemed a “Server Slam.” As expected, they had some connectivity issues, but overall it was a really solid preview of the game and all the classes, full access to the entire first zone, multiple dungeons and even a buffed legendary drop rate so some of the more interesting gear could be seen at lower levels. And when I wondered aloud about whether this seasonal model would eclipse classic expansions, the head of Diablo himself, Rod Fergusson, was quick to clarify that no, they’re still doing those too. They would also not be following Diablo Immortal’s pay-for-power mobile monetization path, and any store or battle pass items would be cosmetic only, about the best you can hope for with most modern live games. But the team was extremely clear that they were not launching with anything goofy and game-breaking like the Auction House. With Diablo 3’s seasons, it was apparent that Diablo 4 would follow the same path.
